Worry is something we do all too often. Many times we worry about things that have already happened and we cannot change, things that will happen but we still cannot change (such as death, Hebrews 9:27), or things that never have or will happen. Worry is believed to be a leading cause of heart trouble, high blood pressure, stomach disorders, and respiratory ailments. In Matthew 6:24-34, Jesus deals with the problem of worrying. He tells us why we shouldnâ??t worry, and that worry is actually a sign of lack of faith in God.

From our text in the book of Matthew we learn that there is more to life than food and raiment (Matthew 6:25). The world we live in measures success by oneâ??s wealth, home, vehicles, clothing, etc. However, God measures success according to oneâ??s willingness to follow Him (Luke 9:23-26). When you take your final breath and slip from life to death, earthly success will mean nothing, only if your success in following the Lord will then matter.

Jesus then tells us that we are of greater value than the birds, the lilies, and the grass (Matthew 6:26,28-30,32). Everything you see is a part of Godâ??s creation (Genesis 1). He loved His creation enough to take care of it for thousands of years now. It shows a lack of faith in God when we worry about the necessities of life while seeing Him provide for other things He has created.

When considering Matthew 6:27, worry is pointless. There are many things we can do in life to help accomplish much. None greater than becoming a Christian and serving the Lord all the days of your life. In all we can do, worry does not help or accomplish anything. Actually, it is usually worry that holds people back.

We must remember that our Heavenly Father knows our needs even before we ask Him (Matthew 6:32). Just because He already knows our needs, it doesnâ??t give us the right to not ask (1 John 5:14).

Then Jesus tells us each day has enough trouble of its own and that we shouldnâ??t worry about the next (Matthew 6:34). Do not allow the day you have to be ruined by what has happened in the past or what may or may not happen in the future. Take the day you have and live it for the Lord.

Jesus concludes this lesson on worry with a stipulation. In the lesson He tells us that God will take care of us if we are living for Him (Matthew 6:33). Would you be willing to provide for someone who was not willing to do what you say? Jesus says we must seek first the kingdom of God. Upon doing so, all these things (blessings from God) will be added unto us. Are you seeking first the kingdom of God?
