Joshua urged Israel to "Fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD!" (see Joshua 24:14)

If we fear God and have the proper respect for him, we will serve him in sincerity and truth. Sincerity means our service will be legitimate. It will not be feigned, pretended, or merely "going through the motions" in a minimal effort to do "just enough". Truth entails obedience; if we're going to serve the Lord we will do what he tells us to do.

John 4:22-24 helps us see that properly following God means doing what he has instructed. There Jesus told a Samaritan woman "You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirt and truth." (NKJV)

Respecting God also means putting away any gods in our lives so we can properly serve the true and living God.

Joshua urged Israel to "put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt." (see Joshua 24:14) Likewise, we must put away anything that we've allowed to occupy a higher place in our lives than God. Often when people think about false gods they think of idols: things that were made by man's hands to look like different things. These idols are then worshiped by people even though they have no power or authority. But if you live in a culture that doesn't have physical idols, you can still be guilty of idolatry. Colossians 3:5 helps us see that covetousness - an inappropriate desire for something that doesn't belong to you - is idolatry. Anything that we put ahead of God - whether it's a physical item or a human being - is an idol. If we're going to truly choose to serve the Lord we must put away any idolatry in our lives. Israel had to put away false gods. We have to put away worshiping the things society worships: things like materialism, sexual immorality, etc.

Will you choose to serve the Lord? You're more likely to make that proper choose if you have the proper respect for God. God is all-powerful. He created the universe and the very planet we live on. He has given us our air to breathe, water to drink, and food to eat. Respect for God can prompt us to serve Him in sincerity and truth.

If we can help you obey the Gospel, please let us know.

What does the Bible say about salvation?

  • All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
  • The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).
  • But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).
  • Not everyone will go to Heaven (Matthew 7:13-14; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
  • Only those who obey God will go to Heaven (Matthew 7:21).
  • Obedience means believing that Jesus is the Son of God (John 8:24; Hebrews 11:6).
  • Repenting of sins (a change of life) (Luke 13:3; Acts 17:30).
  • Confessing your faith in Jesus (Romans 10:9-10).
  • Being baptized for the remission (forgiveness) of sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1 Peter 3:20-21).
  • Live as a faithful Christian until death (Titus 2:12; Revelation 2:10).
