Lesson Text:
John 1:1-4: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men."

John 3:19-21: "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."

Ephesians 5:13: "But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light."

Lesson:
Jesus is the light of the world. Light reproves sin and darkness. We need to be a christian and be children of Light.

  1. The Source of Light is Divine
    • Jesus came to be a light to all people.
      • Matthew 4:13-17: "And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"

      • Luke 2:32: "A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel."

      • Paul stated in Acts 26:23, "That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles."

    • Jesus is the only light of the world.
      • John 1:4-9: "In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

      • John 8:12: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

      • John 9:5: "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

    • Christ’s mission involved leaving heaven to come to earth to give light to all men.
Jesus wants you and I to become the children of light.
      • John 12:35-36: "Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them"

    • We can know the light through the gospel of Christ.
Paul wrote about the "light of the glorious gospel of Christ."
      • 2 Corinthians 4:4: "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

    • This is the "light that shineth in a dark place"
      • 2 Peter 1:19-21: "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."

      • This source of light comes today through the Word of God, the Gospel of Christ.

  2. Christians are to reflect the divine light.
    • Christians are to let that light shine.
      • Matthew 5:14-16: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

    • Christians are called the "children of light".
      • Ephesians 5:8: "For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light"

      • 1 Thessalonians 5:5-8: "Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation."

    • The Christian's light must shine.
      • John 5:35: "He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light."

  3. What are some ways that Christians let their light shine?
    • Christians are not to allow darkness to take residence and dim the light of the Gospel in their lives.
      • Luke 11:33-36: "No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light."

    • Christians must put away unholy things from their lives.
      • Philippians 2:14-16: "Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain."

    • Christians must seek holy things.

    • Christians must hold forth the Word of God.
      • Philippians 2:16: "Holding forth the word of life."

      • Philippians 1:17: "knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel."

    • Put God first always in your life.
      • Matthew 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Conclusion:
May we determine to always be "a burning and shining light" (John 5:35).

There is a great distinct difference between the light of righteousness and the darkness of sin. Will you not submit to the light of the Gospel even today?

The Bible states that we can obey the gospel and be added to the Lord's body by the Lord himself. Hear the gospel (Romans 10:17) ; Have faith (Mark 16:16); Repent of your sins (Luke 13:3,5); Confess the dear name of Christ (Romans 10:9-10) and be baptized to wash away your sins (Acts 2:38). We then meet the grace of Almighty God (Ephesians 2:8). Be faithful even until you die for the Lord (Revelation 2:10) so that Heaven can be your eternal reward.

Thank you my friend for studying the Bible with us today and may God bless you as you continue to read and study the Bible.
