Lesson Text:
1 Timothy 3:16 - "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

  1. God was Manifested in the Flesh
    • God came to earth in the form of man and in the person of Christ - John 1:1,14; Philippians 2:5-7
    • Paul speaks of the deity of Jesus and calls Him God. cf Matthew 17:5; 1 John 1:1-2

  2. He was Justified in the Spirit
    • The Holy Spirit attested to the fact that Jesus was God in the flesh. Matthew 3:16; 12:28; Acts 3:2-6
    • The Holy Spirit attested to Jesus by the things He imparted to the apostles after the ascension of Jesus - John 14:26; 16:13-14; Acts 2:1-4; Ephesians 3:3-5
    • He attests to Jesus as the Son of God today through means of the gospel - Acts 2

  3. He was Seen of Angels
    • Angels announced the birth of our Lord - Luke 2:13-14
    • An angel warned Joseph to flee to Egypt - Matthew 2:13
    • Ministered to Him in the wilderness - Matthew 4:11
    • An angel ministered to Him in the Garden - Luke 22:43
    • An angel rolled away the stone for Jesus - Matthew 28:2
    • An angel announced His resurrection - Luke 24:4-7
    • Angels announced the fact of Him returning one day - Acts 1:10-11

  4. He was Preached to the Gentiles
    • Shows the gospel message is for all mankind, not just the Jews - Romans 3:23; Eph 2:14-15
    • Jesus would be sought by the Gentiles - Isaiah 11:10; 42:1-6; 60:3

  5. He was Believed on by the World
    • The gospel went across the known world in the time of Paul - Colossians 1:27.
    • This mystery that brings about godliness causes people to believe in Jesus; "Believed" is a part for the whole; all the commands being obeyed.

  6. He was Received Up into Glory
    • Jesus ascended back into heaven - Acts 1:8-11; Ephesians 4:8-10; Mark 16:19
    • Jesus said this would take place - John 14:12; 16:16; 20:17

Are you a Christian? God's plan reveals that after hearing the gospel taught, that we are to have faith (Romans 10:17; Mark 16:15-16). This faith leads us to repent of our sins and to confess the good name of Christ as the only begotten Son of God (Luke 13:3,5; Romans 10:9-10). The final step of God's plan of salvation is scriptural baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38). Baptism puts one into Christ and into His church (Acts 2:42-47). Paul wrote, "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."(Galatians 3:26-27). Jesus' blood is that which will wash away our sins. It is by contacting His blood that we have the grace of God and our sins are forgiven. "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" (Ephesians 1:7).

Will you consider our study today and then respond in loving obedience to the commands of God? Thank you for studying with us today. May God bless you as you continue to read and study the Bible.
