The Problem of Forsaking the Assembly

Bible Study MaterialsJake Taft discusses whether or not we are required to assemble together or can we simply stay home and sleep in?

When searching for answers, one must always remember that the Bible is God's Word. It is not something that you can read and then pick and choose what you want to do or believe. You must take it all and correctly use and apply it. If you or the person you are trying to reach doesn't respect God's Word for what it truly is, then you are going to have an uphill battle awaiting you.

On the matter of missing the assembly... if a person has begun missing the assembly, if it is not corrected soon, it will snowball into that person eventually forsaking the Truth and falling back into the sinful world. Christianity is something that must be worked at daily. Luke 9:23 says, "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Missing worship service is simply a sign that a Christian's daily cross carrying has declined to almost the point of non-existence. If a Christian cannot even make it out to worship God one day a week for only a couple of hours, then the world has, once again entangled them and is drawing them away and they are in danger of losing their souls, and they will if this process is not stopped. Let's take a look at some specific verses dealing with this.

Hebrews 10:25, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."

According to Hebrews 10:25, we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, but we are to come together and exhort one another. Why is it so important to not forsake the assembly? By forsaking the assembly, you are putting worldly things ahead of God. God demands that he be put first in your life (Matthew 10:37-38, "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me"). If you are a Christian and you are not putting God first then you are in danger of falling away from the Faith.

Now, while some people say that it is impossible to fall from Grace, the Bible clearly says differently. Please note the following scriptures:

Hebrews 6:4-6, "For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame."

2 Peter 2:20-22, "For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire."

Galatians 5:4, "Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace."

1 Corinthians 10:12, "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

Acts 8:1-25 gives us an actual example of this. Simon the sorcerer obeyed the Gospel and traveled around with Philip, but when he saw Peter and John laying hands on the Christians there and imparting to them the gift of the Holy Ghost, he fell back into his old ways. Peter, rebuked him sternly and Simon asked him to pray for him. Now some people may say that Simon never really believed, but that's not what the Bible says. Remember, the Bible is the infalliable Word of God, written by God via inspired men (2 Peter 1:21, 1 Thessalonians 2:13), if the Bible says simply that Simon believed and was baptized, then Simon truly believed and obeyed what was taught. To say otherwise is to argue with God!

Use these scriptures as best you can to press the importance of attending the worship services to those who have been missing them. They need to be aware of the trap they are falling into. It's so very easy for Satan to whisper in our ear that we need to do such & such rather than study or maybe he convinces us that we need to work on Sundays, or maybe he entices us to stay up late on Saturday night so that we sleep late on Sunday morning or we aren't awake enough to truly worship even if we are there. It's very easy to fall into these traps. Most every Christian at one time or another has had to deal with this problem. Satan tries to keep us so wrapped up in everyday things that we forget the real reason we're here. Eccl.12:13 tells us why we're here; "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."
