"I hear many different views about how to be saved from my sins. Will you please tell me what the Bible says I must do to be saved?"

The greatest question that can be asked is, "What must I do to be saved?" This question was asked many times in the Bible (Acts 2:37; 9:6; 16:30). For one to ask such a question he obviously realizes that he is lost (Romans 3:23). Upon believing in the one true God (Ephesians 4:6), Jesus Christ as the savior of mankind (Matthew 1:21), and the Bible as inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16), we can search the scriptures together (John 5:39) and find the answer.

I must first hear the word of God. "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). Without hearing the word of God, in its true form by a teacher or a direct reading of it, it is impossible for me to know about God, heaven and hell, sin and salvation, and the many other fascinating facts of the Bible.

Upon reading the Bible, you will find its focus is on Jesus. I must believe that "Jesus is the Christ (Savior), the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Without believing it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6), and I will be condemned for not doing so (Mark 16:16).

A believer will then want to obey God (Luke 6:46; John 14:15). Obedience includes repentance (Luke 13:3,5; Acts 2:38; 17:30). This could be the most difficult step in becoming a Christian (being saved). Repentance is to stop doing what God doesnâ??t want us to do, and turn from it. If I were traveling from point A to point B and suddenly realized I was going in the wrong direction, I would have to stop and turn around. Repentance is just that. I must stop doing what is wrong and start doing what God commands of me.

Then, confession of faith in Christ must be made (Matthew 10:32). This confession is a step in the direction toward salvation (Romans 10:10). This is not a confession of sin or wrong one has done. Confessing sin is done only when you are in the "body of Christ" (Colossians 1:18), and have committed sin (James 5:16). This is simply saying, as the Ethiopian eunuch did in Acts 8:37, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

This will lead the believer to be "baptized for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38). Baptism, a total burial of the body (Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12) in water (Acts 8:36, 38), will save a person from sin (1 Peter 3:21). Each step leading to salvation is important, but it is during the final step when a lost soul is "baptized into Christ", thus "putting Him on" (Galatians 3:27).

After baptism you must live faithful until death (Revelation 2:10). This is in daily living (Titus 2:11-12), and in worship to God (John 4:23-24).

Almost everything in life comes with a book of instructions. As you know, skipping just one step will lead to a different end result than what is desired. The Bible is Godâ??s instruction book for life (2 Timothy 3:16). If just one step is changed or left out, Godâ??s instructions have not been followed.

Why not obey Godâ??s instructions today?

And now let's listen to what the Bible says about how to become a Christian

Is there something that I must do to become a Christian? Has this thought ever cross your mind? You are not alone in your search for the Truthâ?¦many others have asked the same question today and even in Bible times. After hearing the gospel in Acts chapter two, a group of people asked â??Men and brethren what shall we doâ?? (Acts 2:37). So it is likely that you today are asking the same question! The answers are given in the Bible. We are taught by the gospel of Christ that we must hear the gospel (Romans 10:17-â??So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of Godâ?); We must also believe in Christ (Mark 16:16 â??He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damnedâ?. We must repent of our sins (Turning away from sin and turning to God) Luke 13:3,5. We must confess the good name of Christ as the only begotten Son of God (Matthew 10:32, 33; Acts 8:37) and we are to be baptized for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38). When we obey God through obedience to the gospel, we have obeyed that form of doctrine (Romans 6) and Jesus adds us to His church, the church of Christ. We have become a â??Christianâ?. We become a Christian the same way that others did so in the book of Acts. The same process that makes us a Christian makes us a member of the body of Christ, the church of Christ. We must live a faithful Christian life even if we must die for Christ (Rev. 2:10). What a great life it is when we become a Christian! We become a new person with new goals. Paul described it as a â??new creationâ? (II Cor. 5:10). We would like to study with you more in your search for Truth and desire to become a Christian.
